After a forced break in 2020, Piran Days of Architecture are finally back! The architecture conference will take place on Saturday, November 27th in the Auditorium in Portorož and there are already many interesting architects confirmed.
This years’ topic:
What is measurable in architecture?
Measurability has always been inextricably linked to architecture. As a set of dimensions, modules, grids, and design principles which, in a narrower sense, define architectural planning. Or in a broader sense, as the increasingly extensive and complex world of requirements, rules, standards, parameters, planning methods, and tools, on which all engineering considerations that co-create architecture are based. The diverse construction methods and, in part, the use of architecture also include various aspects of measurability. The fundamental requirements for “commodity” and “firmness”, utilitas” and “firmitas” of architecture seem to fit perfectly with the mechanistic view of the world that seeks to measure, understand, prove, predict, anticipate, plan, and manage everything.
Moreover, even “delight” or “venustas”, is often interpreted in architecture merely as a reflection of the relationships and ratios between elements.
Is therefore measurability essential for good architecture?
Thanks also to our efforts, a special highlight will be the live talk and lecture with Los Angeles based Dr. Raymond Richard Neutra, son of Richard Neutra whom we met several times during Modernism Week in Palm Springs. Who else could be better to discuss this topic with?
