What Modernism Week is for Palm Springs in February and La Biennale is for Venice in May is the International Architectural Conference for Piran in November! They all represent the highlights of every architectural year when it comes to exhibitions, tours and lectures!
The focus for 2019 will be on renovation and transformation:
From the old to a new life!
One of the most beautiful testimonials of the layering of the history – the Basilica in Syracuse – proves that the new intervention can overcome the old one, without blurring the traces of the past. The new temple allows the old one to remain a base of new walls, and transmits the stories of the ancient past to us that live in them today. History has not always just erased everything previously built and cut the ties to the past. Often, through the stratification of layers and elements, the life of our heritage and our ancestors, written in architecture, has been revealed. Thus, our links with the space and the past time are still alive, creating our identity, and at the same time enabling us our differentiation and development.
The question we are asking is how to live with this past. How to feel, recognize and evaluate it? How to live with it and in it today, when the times since its creation have changed so much? And why keep it at all? How to insert our time into it, how to adapt, transform, interpret or reuse it? There are many different ways, new concepts are emerging, and the challenge that such projects bring is in the confrontation of all the various timescales. – Prof. Maruša Zorec
