“Die neue Heimat – A social democratic Ideal” – Another great exhibition in cooperation with the Hamburgischen Architekturarchiv and the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte will open its doors to the public on February 28th, 2019 at Architekturmuseum der TUM!
The ‘Neue Heimat’ was the largest and most important independent housing corporation in postwar Europe. Over the span of more than thirty years, it was responsible for planning and completing over 400.000 apartments and, since the 1960s, numerous municipal and industrial buildings in Germany. Many important postwar architects worked for Neue Heimat and were crucially involved in its concepts and buildings. The scandalous collapse of Neue Heimat at the beginning of the 1980s came as a shock to the West German public and marked the end of an era. In light of the current housing crisis and discussions about densification in many cities it seems that now is a perfect moment to take a fresh look at Neue Heimat and analyze it in depth for the first time. The exhibition examines the protagonists of Neue Heimat, including around 700 architects and urban planners, and their influence on developments in housing and urban planning. A selection of buildings, projects and urban planning concepts will document the company’s history and its significance today with the help of drawings, photos, models and written sources.
