If you are visiting Grado/Italy these days don’t miss the very first photo exhibition by Willy Sanson at Cinema Cristallo.
Willy, an enthusiastic photographer, started traveling when he was 29 years old and his first destination was Laos, followed by Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Nepal and Myanmar. His first approaches to photography were the same as of every traveler: capturing and “keeping in mind” landscapes, people, and animals. But a certain predisposition and curiosity towards people and, specifically, their faces was soon made. Being able to grasp its essence in everyday life, observing its behavior, listening to the idiom, sharing small gestures, thus creating a subtle connection between photographer and subject, was his intent.
His travels do not traverse the classic tourist routes and are the search for the little-known that allowed him to get in contact with wonderful people and places. The journey to Sanson has been experienced as a personal and spiritual growth and led to better understanding of oneself and to overcome its limits. Indeed, India was particularly significant for Sanson because, in addition to giving it unique scenarios and unexpected emotions, it has put it hard on both physical survival and emotional stability. On each trip he was able to recognize common traits, namely humility, dignity, the strength of people who, despite everything, continue to smile.
In his shots Willy Sanson prefers the portrait, a photographic genre that closely links the photographer with the subject, in intimate contact that is played in one look. The portrait is the expression of a meeting that Willy Sanson lives in a natural and spontaneous way, convinced that it is what has become so vulnerable as it is prepared to seize every little shade generated by the emotions, succeeding for that moment to fill the Distance that separates it from every life it faces by filtering it through the lens of his camera. Ethics remain the starting point for a photographer to respect. Through his photographs, Sanson seeks to put in place, in the best and most congenial way, the values of humanity and respect for the individual. Photography in these reportage is strictly in color, because only in this way is it possible to grasp the true essence of the known circumstances and countries, all over India, which is “color” as an empirical one.
“Photographing is to put the mind, the eyes, and the heart on the same line” – Willy Sanson
Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Willy and listen to his very personal stories behind his images. We do hope that there will be other places where Willy’s exceptional images will be shown soon!
